CATS: Original London Cast Recording | Available on Vinyl via UMe
On February 14, UMe brings the worldwide musical sensation CATS back to vinyl on high-grade 180-gram 2LP. The black vinyl reissue of the Original London Cast Recording was initially released in the UK in July 1981 and in the U.S. in July 1982.
British composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber (Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera), launched what is indisputably an international phenomenon when in 1977 he decided to adapt T.S. Eliot’s 1939 poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats as a song cycle for the stage.
CATS fans will once again be able to enjoy spinning the Original London Cast Recording from Webber’s daring show: produced by Cameron Mackintosh (Hamilton, Miss Saigon), and with featured direction by Trevor Nunn (Macbeth, Les Misérables), choreography by Gillian Lynne (The Phantom of the Opera, Cabaret), and lyrics by Richard Stilgoe (Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera).
The release includes indelible CATS songs as the perpetually raucous “The Rum Tum Tugger,” and the iconic “Memory” with appearances including Finola Hughes, Paul Nicholas, Myra Sands, Wayne Sleep, Susan Jane Tanner, Geraldine Gardner, Paul Nicholas, Brian Blessed, John Thornton, Bonnie Langford, Elaine Paige, Jeff Shankley, Seeta Indrani and more.
CATS, one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years. Since its world premiere, CATS has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 73 million people worldwide, The ground-breaking production has won numerous awards, including the Olivier, Evening Standard and Tony Award for Best Musical and two Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album. The magnificent musical score includes one of the most treasured songs in musical theatre —‘Memory’, which has been recorded by over 150 artists from Barbra Streisand and Johnny Mathis to Liberace and Barry Manilow.
