Watch Black Nile Perform “Miss Ann” for

The Henhouse Studio Sessions

Black Nile plays at Grand Performances in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 16. The show starts at 6:30 PM with support from DJ Carlos Niño and Linafornia. Black Nile will take the stage at 8:30 PM. The free all-ages show is at California Plaza (350 South Grand Avenue).
Born and raised in Los Angeles, multi-instrumentalist brothers Aaron and Lawrence Shaw have been playing music together for most of their lives and more recently as the duo Black Nile. Though the group can’t be defined by a single genre, the duo draws from music rooted in Black culture, including blues, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, soul and more blended into a new sound altogether. This inspired the title of their third album, River of Emotions, which was released on May 20 via Daddy Kev’s Alpha Pup Records.
“The roots we grew up with, they still influence our music to this day, constantly soaking in life experiences to impact our music,” Lawrence says. “Also, transparency will always be in our music. It helps to show people what we went and lived through, so all will know why we play and produce music as hard as we do.”
In the same vein as their music, Black Nile’s show at Grand Performances is a celebration/dedication to The World Stage, an educational and performance art space in Leimert Park Village, the heart of Los Angeles’ African American cultural community. It was founded in 1989 by the late world-renowned master jazz drummer Billy Higgins and by poet and community arts activist Kamau Daáood.
